The Stake Truck

Thinking about a Stake Truck?

The stake body truck has probably been around as long as any other style truck, this popular body style began appearing in the early 1900’s on Model T and Model A Fords. It was a basic truck, a cab for the driver and a passenger, and a flat bed with removable side panels. Other than increased size and load capacity, the truck hasn’t changed all that much. It’s simple design and versatility have made is one of the most popular trucks of all time.

If your are thinking about buying a used stake truck, there are a few important points you is should carefully consider, before you make your final decision. Stake trucks come in all sizes and cargo carrying capacity, so think carefully about the specifics of what you will be hauling first. Consider the weight of what you will be carrying. Think about how you will load this product up onto the bed.

There are a variety of materials that are available for the side panels on a stake truck. There are open slats made from wood or metal, will you require a heavy gauge metal or will simple wood slats do? Would solid removable side panels be better? The side panels are often available in different heights, which will work best for you?

Think about whether you will need a bulkhead behind the cab, commonly referred to as a “headache rack”. If the cargo you will be carrying is heavy or bulky, you will want some protection behind you if your load shifts forward.

Consider the platform material, is it wood, steel, aluminum? Is a rough or a smooth surface? A smooth aluminum surface can work out nicely if you need to slide your freight into place. But depending upon what you will be carrying this could be a hazard, so choose wisely!

Will you need a power lift gate to load with? If so what load capacity and style lift gate will work the best for your specific needs?

Taking all of these things into consideration before you buy, will help prevent you from having a serious case of “buyer’s remorse” with your newly found stake truck.
